Rep. Wittke's E-Update

Gov. Evers signs GOP Budget, and vetoes Personal Property Tax legislation

The Governor recently signed the Republican budget, WI Act 58, and is now busy taking credit for the work my colleagues on the budget writing committee did over the last several months. While the Governor vetoed some significant aspects of the budget, the majority was spared his veto pen. For example, Republicans increased public library system aid by $6.5 million, and school library aids were given $6.4 million. Republicans also increased Special Education funding to 30% and public education to fund 2/3rds the costs.

Some of the partial vetoes are disappointing, including two significant vetoes involving Wisconsin's income tax tables and regrettably, a $550 million allocation to the rainy day fund. The Governor also vetoed separate legislation aimed at eliminating the personal property tax for businesses. These vetoes mean over $650 million in relief taxpayers will not have available to them, and nearly $200 million in taxes that businesses must continue to pay to the state.

Overall, I am pleased the Governor signed the budget. I look forward to working with my colleagues on a proposal to repeal the personal property tax once and for all.

DATCP and DOR Warn Consumers to be Alert for Fraudulent Collection Mailings

Wisconsin taxpayers should be alert for suspicious mailings regarding tax collection. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) have received reports from multiple counties of individuals receiving fraudulent letters related to tax collection cases.

The public can identify these letters by looking for:

  • A return address listing the “Benefits Suspension Unit,” a Wisconsin county, and “Public Judgement Records.”

  • A fake government seal with an image of the U.S. in a circle, rather than a state, county, or municipality seal.

  • A paid postage mark indicating the letter originates from Los Angeles, CA.

  • There is no information on remitting payment, only a number to call to “avoid enforcement.”

If you have received a similar notice in the mail, contact DATCP by filing a complaint, sending an email to or calling (800)-422-7128.
